The short answer: about 7,000 steps a day. The largest analysis of the evidence, published in The Lancet Public Health in July 2025, pooled 57 studies and found that most of the measurable health benefit had arrived by roughly 7,000 daily steps. Compared with 2,000 steps a day, 7,000 was associated with 47% lower all-cause mortality. Beyond that point the curve flattens for most outcomes. The famous 10,000-step target is not a medical guideline. It came from a 1960s Japanese pedometer name.

That does not mean 10,000 steps is wrong, or that extra steps are wasted. It means the target most people are failing to hit is set higher than the evidence requires, and the gap between 4,000 and 7,000 steps matters far more than the gap between 7,000 and 10,000.

Where did 10,000 steps come from?

From a product name. In 1965, a Japanese company began selling a pedometer called the manpo-kei, which translates roughly as "10,000-step meter." The number was memorable, and the Japanese character for 10,000 resembles a walking figure. It spread through fitness culture and eventually into the default settings of nearly every wearable sold today.

No health authority has ever adopted it. The U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and the World Health Organization guidelines both express targets in minutes: 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week for adults, plus muscle-strengthening on two or more days. Neither document sets a step count.

What does the newest evidence say?

In July 2025, a team led by Melody Ding at the University of Sydney published a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis in The Lancet Public Health. It pooled 57 studies published between 2014 and 2025 across more than ten countries, and it is the broadest look at daily steps and health outcomes assembled so far (Ding et al., Lancet Public Health 2025).

Using 2,000 steps a day as the low-activity reference point, walking about 7,000 steps a day was associated with:

  • 47% lower risk of death from any cause
  • 25% lower risk of cardiovascular disease
  • 38% lower risk of dementia
  • 28% fewer falls
  • 22% lower risk of depressive symptoms
  • 14% lower risk of type 2 diabetes
  • 6% lower risk of cancer

The authors concluded that 7,000 steps a day is "a meaningful target for the general population." For most of the outcomes they measured, the additional gain from 7,000 to 10,000 was small.

Two things are worth holding onto here. First, these are observational cohorts, not randomized trials. People who walk more differ from people who walk less in ways that are hard to fully adjust for. Second, the effect sizes are large and consistent across many separate populations, which is the pattern you would expect if the relationship is real.

Does the right number change with age?

Yes, and the direction may surprise you. A 2022 meta-analysis in the same journal, led by Amanda Paluch, pooled 15 international cohorts covering 47,471 adults with 3,013 deaths recorded (Paluch et al., Lancet Public Health 2022). It found the mortality curve leveled off at different points by age:

  • Adults 60 and older: risk plateaued at roughly 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day. More steps than that did not add measurable longevity benefit.
  • Adults under 60: risk plateaued at roughly 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day.

So older adults get to the plateau sooner. That is a genuinely encouraging finding, because it means the target for the group with the most to gain is also the most achievable one.

Where is the steepest part of the curve?

At the bottom. This is the single most useful thing to take from the step research, and it is the part that gets lost when the conversation is framed as 7,000 versus 10,000.

The dose-response relationship is curved, not straight. Moving from about 2,000 steps a day to about 4,000 produced a large share of the total risk reduction in the 2025 analysis. Each additional thousand steps after that bought progressively less. In practical terms: a person averaging 2,500 steps who gets to 5,000 has done more for their health than a person averaging 8,000 who pushes to 11,000.

If you are starting from a low base, you do not need to reorganize your life. You need roughly 20 to 25 extra minutes of walking a day.

How many steps are you probably taking now?

U.S. adults average somewhere in the range of 4,000 to 5,000 steps per day in accelerometer-based studies, which puts the typical American on the steep part of the curve rather than the flat part. For most people the honest gap is not 10,000 minus current, it is closer to 2,000 to 3,000 steps.

A few reference points that make the arithmetic concrete:

  • A brisk 10-minute walk is roughly 1,000 to 1,200 steps for most adults.
  • Parking at the far end of a lot, twice a day, is often 300 to 600 steps.
  • One flight of stairs up and down is roughly 40 to 50 steps, and adds intensity that flat walking does not.

Do steps replace structured exercise?

Not entirely. Step counts capture aerobic volume well, and they say almost nothing about the two things that decline fastest with age: muscle mass and strength. Both the U.S. and WHO guidelines call for resistance training on two or more days a week, and no amount of walking substitutes for it.

Steps also miss intensity. Two people can log 8,000 steps with very different cardiovascular effects depending on pace and terrain. What if you cannot hit 7,000?

Then aim lower and stay consistent. The evidence does not support a cliff edge where benefits switch on. It supports a smooth curve where every increment from a low base returns something, with the largest returns at the beginning.

If mobility, pain, or a medical condition limits your walking, the same principle holds for whatever movement is available to you. The bottom line

Seven thousand steps a day is the number best supported by the current evidence, and it comes from the largest analysis assembled to date. Ten thousand is a marketing artifact that happens to sit in a reasonable range. Neither number is a threshold, because the underlying relationship is a curve, and the steepest, most valuable part of that curve sits between roughly 2,000 and 7,000 steps.

The practical instruction is short. Find out what you average now. Add about 2,000. Keep the resistance training separate and non-negotiable.
